This was the year that saw the closing down of many foreign stations, including Trincomalee, where we had many a bash with the R.A.N. in the Naafi Club.

There were also happy memories of swimming off elephant island, and the often exciting games against the Indian and Pakistan Navies.

Many of us also enjoyed the not so palatial splendour of Diyatalawa Rest Camp, where life was led in a very relaxed manner.  The splendid golf course was greatly used by all rest camp attendees, and it was common for many to have a caddy who carried the One Club and One Putter for you, and whose task it was to forage in the undergrowth for your precious lost ball when you left the fairway.

It was on our return to Colombo from Diyatalawa that we learned of the disaster of the Munich Air Crash involving the Manchester United  Football Team.

Any other memories that others may wish to share with others?  Please forward to me at editorbill@hmsgambia.com

For Exercise, For Exercise

Starshell, starshell, burning bright,
Gave us all a nasty fright,
Swinging, shining, overhead,
Showing up the good ship fred.

Had you burst some other place,
You might have saved our bright red face,
For we all thought before you came,
That WE were teaching YOU the game!!!
